Overview

The paver that never dates

A brick-shape paver is exactly what it sounds like — a rectangular block roughly the proportions of a face brick. It's the most familiar, most versatile paver on the market, and the reason it never dates is that it echoes the brickwork of the house itself.

There are two families: cement (concrete) brick pavers, which are economical and come in the widest colour range, and clay brick pavers, which are fired like face brick and hold their colour beautifully for decades. We supply and lay both.

Laid in the right pattern on a proper base, brick-shape pavers work as well on a driveway as they do on a patio or path.

In detail

Clay, cement and how to lay them

The material and the pattern together decide the look and the strength.

Clay brick pavers

Fired clay pavers keep their colour permanently — they don't fade the way some pigments can — and develop a lovely, mellow character over time. They're the premium choice for a classic look and a favourite around heritage homes.

Cement brick pavers

Concrete brick pavers are strong, consistent and economical, and come in the broadest range of colours and finishes. For most driveways they're an excellent, hard-wearing choice.

Patterns that suit the job

Herringbone for driveways (the strongest interlock under vehicles), stretcher bond for a clean contemporary path or patio, and basketweave for a softer, traditional feel. We'll show you each against your home.

What's the difference between clay and cement brick pavers?

Clay pavers are fired like face brick and keep their colour permanently with a mellow, natural character. Cement (concrete) pavers are more economical, extremely consistent and come in the widest colour range. Both are hard-wearing; we'll help you choose.

Are brick-shape pavers strong enough for a driveway?

Yes — in 60mm and laid in herringbone on a compacted base, they carry vehicles comfortably. For trucks or forklifts we'd step up to 80mm.

Which pattern should I choose?

Herringbone for driveways, stretcher bond for a modern path or patio, basketweave for a traditional courtyard. We'll show you each against your home.

Do clay pavers fade?

No — fired clay holds its colour far better than many pigmented products, which is a big part of their appeal.

How much do they cost?

Supplied and laid, most brick-paver projects fall in the R220–R500 per m² range depending on material, colour and site. Your quote is firm and itemised.
