Overview
A patio earns more use than any room in the house
Nobody schedules time in the lounge the way they schedule a Sunday braai. From September through to April the patio is where Gauteng actually lives — kids in and out, plates handed round, someone parked at the fire with a pair of tongs. Levels tied to the house, not just the garden
A patio has to read as level with your doors and thresholds, sit below the damp-proof course, and still fall away from the wall. Get that wrong and you're chasing damp in the plaster, or a step-down that trips someone at night. We set out from the house first and fix the paving height against the DPC before working outward — the opposite order to how quick jobs get built.
Falls and drainage that keep water off the walls
Every patio is laid to a deliberate fall, generally away from the house toward a lawn, bed or channel drain. An open patio carries the full weight of a Highveld thunderstorm; a covered patio still needs it for wash-down and wind-driven rain under the roof edge. Where a patio is boxed in by walls on two or three sides, we'll often build in a small channel drain too.
The right paver for a patio, not a driveway
A driveway needs a thick 60mm block for vehicle loads; a patio doesn't carry cars, so we work with a 40–50mm paver and a wider choice of finish. Sandstone or reconstituted flagstone in a random-coursed slab, and large-format cement in a stack-bond, both give that open, few-joints look. Clay brick in herringbone or basketweave gives a warmer, more textured patio suited to an older-style home.

A patio takes a different kind of punishment to a driveway — braai grease, red wine, bare feet, bicycles and the odd dropped tong. We wanted flagstone but were worried about it staining near the braai. Two years of Sunday lunches later it still looks the way it did on day one, and the whole family actually uses the garden now instead of just looking at it from the lounge.

Most patios land between R220 and R500 per m² supplied and laid, depending on the paver and how much ground preparation is needed. Flagstone and large-format pavers sit toward the middle to upper end of that range; clay brick in a simple pattern is more affordable. We give you a firm, itemised price at the free site visit.
What's the best paver for a patio?
It depends on the look you want. Flagstone or large-format pavers give an open, few-joints finish that suits modern entertaining areas and works well around a pool. Clay brick in herringbone or basketweave gives a warmer, more traditional feel. Both are laid at 40–50mm, thinner than a driveway paver, since a patio doesn't carry vehicle loads. We bring samples to the site visit so you can hold them against your own brickwork.
What's the difference between a covered and an open patio?
An open patio takes the full weight of Gauteng's summer rain, so the fall and drainage have to work alone. A covered or roofed patio gets some shelter, but it still needs a fall for wash-down water and wind-driven rain under the roof edge. The base and levels are built the same way either way; the roof just changes how much rain the paving has to shed.
How do you stop water running toward the house?
By setting the finished paving level against your doors and damp course before we lay a single paver, then building in a fall that carries water away from the walls toward the lawn, a bed or a drain. It's the single most important part of a patio build, and it's invisible once finished — which is exactly why rushed jobs skip it.
Can you match my existing paving or brickwork?
Often, yes. If your existing paver is still available we can extend it; if it's discontinued we'll find the closest match in colour and size, or suggest a complementary paver that ties in rather than clashes. We bring physical samples to the site visit and hold them against your walls before you decide. Our exclusive range gives more choice if you're after something specific.
How long does a patio take to pave?
Two to four working days for a standard residential patio, from excavation to the final sweep, depending on size, access and how complex the levels are. A patio with steps or a change in level built in will take a little longer, and we'll say so upfront at the quote stage.
