Overview
The surround is where the summer actually happens
Nobody spends the whole afternoon in the pool — they spend it around it, dripping to the towels, standing at the braai, chasing kids on wet feet. That strip of paving takes more barefoot traffic than anything else at your house, and it does it wet, in full Highveld sun, splashed with chlorine every time someone bombs in.
So a pool surround has a harder brief than an ordinary patio. It has to grip when it's soaked, stay cool enough to walk on at midday, and take years of pool chemicals without fading or flaking. Get the paver wrong and you've got a surround that's slippery, scorching or crumbling at the edges within a couple of seasons.
We've laid pool decks and residential paving in suburbs right across Johannesburg and Gauteng, and the same rule holds every time: the surround has to be chosen for wet feet first and looks second. Happily, you can have both.

What makes a pool surround safe and comfortable
Five things separate a proper pool deck from ordinary paving laid near water.
Grip is the whole point
Around a pool, a smooth, glossy paver is a hazard — wet feet, wet paving and a running child are a bad mix. We use pavers with a textured, riven or matte surface that holds its grip when it's soaked, the kind you can walk on straight out of the water. It's the most important choice on the whole deck, and the one cheap jobs get wrong.
Cool enough for bare feet
Dark paving and plain concrete soak up the Highveld sun and turn into a hotplate by lunchtime. We steer you toward lighter tones and clay pavers that reflect heat instead of storing it, so the walk from the water to the loungers isn't a hop across coals. Colour isn't only about looks here — it decides whether the deck is usable at midday in January.
Built to shrug off chlorine and salt
Every splash carries chlorine or salt-chlorinated water onto the paving, and it dries there. Softer or poorly fired pavers spall, whiten and fade under that. We lay SABS-approved clay and quality cement pavers that are made to take it, so the colour and the surface hold up season after season. If you run a salt chlorinator we'll factor that in — salt is harder on some materials than others.
Coping — the edge that makes it safe
Coping is the capping that finishes the pool edge, and it earns its keep. A rounded bullnose coping gives you a comfortable lip to grab and pull yourself out, takes the sharpness off the edge so shins and toes survive, and cleanly separates the pool from the surround. We match the coping to the deck or pick a contrast, and we set it dead level so there's no lip to stub a toe on.
Water runs away from the pool, not into it
A pool deck is laid to a deliberate fall — away from the water and away from the house. That stops dirty splash-out, leaves and suntan lotion washing back into the pool and overloading the filter, and keeps water off your foundations. On enclosed or paved-in pools we design in a channel drain so the deck clears fast after a storm.

We were nervous about the kids slipping, but the surface they used grips even when it's soaking. It stays cool enough to walk on at midday too, which I didn't expect. The whole surround looks like it belongs with the house now.

It is when it's laid with the right paver. We use textured, riven or matte-finish pavers around pools specifically because they keep their grip when they're wet — that's the whole point of the surface. Smooth, glossy tiles look good dry but turn slippery the moment they're splashed, so we don't use them next to water. Grip is the first thing we choose for on a pool deck.
Does the paving get hot underfoot?
Any paving warms up in full Highveld sun, but the material and colour make a big difference. Dark pavers and plain concrete store heat and get uncomfortable by midday; lighter tones and clay pavers reflect more of it and stay walkable. We'll steer you toward a cooler-footed option for the surround, especially the route between the water and where people sit.
What's the best paver for around a pool?
A textured, light-toned paver that grips when wet, stays cool in the sun and resists pool chemicals — clay brick and good-quality cement pavers both do this well. Around the water's edge we finish with a bullnose coping for a safe, rounded lip. The exact choice depends on your pool, your house and how much sun the deck gets, which we confirm on site. What is coping and do I need it?
Coping is the capping that finishes the top edge of the pool. A rounded bullnose coping gives you a comfortable lip to grip when you climb out, takes the sharp edge off the pool so toes and shins are safe, and gives the surround a clean, finished line. For a swimming pool we'd always recommend it — it's a safety detail as much as a looks one.
How much does pool deck paving cost?
Most pool surrounds fall between R220 and R500 per m² supplied and laid, with coping quoted separately per metre. The paver you choose, the size and shape of the surround and how much preparation the ground needs all move the figure. We give you a firm, itemised price at the free site visit, so there are no surprises later.
Can you pave around my existing pool?
Yes — a lot of our pool work is upgrading a tired or slippery surround without touching the pool itself. We lift the old paving, sort out the base and falls, lay a proper slip-resistant deck and finish the edge with new coping. If your surround is cracked, uneven or dangerously smooth, that's exactly the job we do. It fits neatly alongside our patio paving too.
