Excavated to the right depth, layered with compacted crushed stone, screeded flat and locked in with proper edge restraints, that base is the difference between a driveway that's still dead level in fifteen years and one that ruts where the wheels track.

How we build a driveway that lasts
There's no shortcut and no secret — just the groundwork most installers rush.
We start below the surface
A driveway lives or dies on its base. We excavate the soft topsoil, bring the level down to solid ground, then build up a compacted sub-base of crushed stone in layers. Each layer is vibrated with a plate compactor so it can carry weight without settling. Skip this and the prettiest pavers in Gauteng will still ripple and sink where your tyres run.
The right paver, the right thickness
For a driveway you want a 60mm interlocking or cobble paver, laid in a herringbone pattern. Herringbone is not just a look — the interlocking angles stop the blocks from shifting under braking and turning wheels, which is exactly what happens to a stretcher-bond driveway over time. Thinner 50mm pavers are perfect for patios and walkways but under-specced for cars.
Edges that hold everything together
Paving with no restraint at the edges spreads outward and opens gaps. We set the perimeter with a concrete haunch or a purpose-made edge, so the whole field of pavers stays locked tight for the life of the driveway. A mowing strip or a contrasting charcoal border makes it look sharp and keeps the grass out of the joints.
Drainage that actually drains
We lay to a deliberate fall so rainwater runs off to where you want it, never toward your garage door or front step. Where a driveway is steep or enclosed we'll design in a channel drain. If you'd prefer water to soak away rather than run off, ask us about permeable pavers.

Most residential driveways land between R220 and R500 per m² supplied and laid, depending on the paver, the soil and how much excavation is needed. A flat, standard driveway sits at the lower end; a sloped site or a decorative paver pushes it up. We give you a firm, itemised price at the free site visit.
Which paver is best for a driveway?
A 60mm interlocking or cobble paver in a herringbone pattern. The interlock and the pattern together resist the shifting caused by braking and turning wheels, which is what breaks up thinner or straight-laid driveways.
Can you pave over my existing driveway?
Usually not, and we'll tell you honestly. Laying new pavers over a cracked or sunken surface just transfers those faults upward. If the old base is sound we can sometimes build on it, but more often the right job is to take it out and build a proper base. That's why our quote is site-specific.
How long does a driveway take?
Three to five working days for a standard residential driveway, from excavation to the final sweep, depending on size, access and weather. Larger or sloped driveways take longer and we'll say so upfront.
Will weeds grow through the paving?
Not through a properly laid driveway. Weeds appear when jointing sand washes out and windblown seed settles in the gaps. We fill the joints correctly, and a polymeric or stabilised sand plus the odd top-up keeps them out. It's also part of our maintenance service.
Do you guarantee the work?
Yes — a written workmanship guarantee on our base preparation and installation, on top of the manufacturer's guarantee on the pavers. If our work settles or fails, we come back and put it right.
