A ridge-and-valley suburb that changes how we pave
Roodepoort sits on the Witwatersrand ridge itself — the name means "red ford", after the gap early travellers cut through the rocky rise here. Stands across the suburb step up and down far more than Johannesburg's flatter suburbs to the east, and a driveway laid without real thought for the gradient ends up cracked, dipping or creeping downhill.
Underneath those slopes sits the same reactive clay found right across the Highveld: it swells when wet and shrinks hard in a dry Gauteng winter, and on a slope that movement is joined by fast-running storm water. Get the base, the fall or the edge restraint wrong here and you're risking more than cracks — you're risking pavers that wash out or slide.

My driveway is on a slope — will paving actually stay put?
It will, if the base is built for the gradient. We compact a proper sub-base, lay to a controlled fall, and fit solid edge restraints — kerbing or concrete haunching — so the pavers can't creep downhill. Paving laid on a slope without that support is what ends up sliding.
Why did my paving crack or dip after a season?
Almost always a base that wasn't dug deep enough or compacted properly for our clay soil. Roodepoort's ridge country sits over the same reactive clay found across the Highveld, and it moves. Re-laying the same bricks on the same weak base only delays the same problem — we rebuild the base first.
Can you work inside an estate or complex?
Regularly. We're used to estate rules around Ruimsig, Wilgeheuwel and Constantia Kloof — contractor registration, resident notices, set hours — and we handle that paperwork ourselves.
