Paving contractors in Randburg

A Ferndale office block, a Northcliff home on the ridge, a driveway in Blairgowrie that's had fifty years of Gauteng winters — Randburg's older suburbs sit on the same restless clay as the rest of the Highveld, just with steeper stands and gardens that have had decades to mature. We build the base to match and guarantee the work in writing.

Local overview

Established suburbs, steeper stands and ground that doesn't sit still

Randburg isn't a new area dressed up as an old one. Most of it was laid out from the 1950s through the 1970s, and it shows in the best possible way — generous stands, established boundary walls and gardens that have had half a century to fill out properly. That maturity is also why so much of our work here starts with pulling something out rather than laying onto bare ground. A driveway put down forty years ago, on a base built to a far lower standard than we'd use today, has usually had enough of moving, cracking and sinking by the time we get the call.

The terrain plays its part too. Randburg runs along a line of ridges and koppies rather than flat Highveld — Northcliff's hill is the obvious landmark, with its water tower visible for kilometres, but plenty of stands through the wider suburb pitch harder than people expect from the street down to the back garden. Add Gauteng's expansive clay, which swells in the wet season and shrinks back hard in winter under whatever sits on top of it, and you've got ground that needs a properly engineered base and a deliberate fall, not a shallow sand bed and hope that summer's thunderstorms behave.

We're in and out of most of the area in a normal week — the office conversions and family homes of Ferndale, the big stands and hillside gardens of Northcliff, the retail hub around Cresta, and the smaller, leafier streets of Bordeaux, Blairgowrie and Fontainebleau.

The local picture

What makes paving in Randburg its own job

Three things about these older suburbs change how a job should be built. Skip any one of them and a new driveway won't outlast a couple of seasons.

Clay soils under a tired old base

Randburg's homes are old enough that most of the original paving was never built to today's standard. A driveway from the seventies or eighties typically sits on little more than a sand bed with no real sub-base, and after decades of Gauteng's clay swelling and shrinking beneath it, that's exactly why it's cracked, dished or gone weedy through every joint. We don't patch over that problem — we lift the old pavers, dig out and compact a proper sub-base, then relay on ground that will actually hold its shape.

Ridges, falls and stormwater

Northcliff's koppie is the obvious high point, but stands right across Randburg — Blairgowrie, parts of Fontainebleau, the streets running down off Bordeaux — pitch more steeply than most people expect. On a slope, a driveway laid without a deliberate fall just channels stormwater straight at the garage door or under the gate. We set every fall to move water off the property into the street or a drain, and we'll build in a channel drain wherever the site calls for one.

Mature gardens and established boundaries

Fifty-year-old gardens come with fifty-year-old trees, and their root systems don't stop politely at the edge of a driveway. We work carefully around roots, irrigation and retaining walls that have stood for decades, and we protect the face brick and garden beds that would be expensive to replace. Where we can, new paving is matched to the character of the home rather than dropped in looking bolted on.

Paving for Randburg's older homes and gardens

Residential work here leans older. There are big, established stands in Northcliff and Ferndale with room for a full driveway plus an entertainment patio, and the smaller, tighter streets of Bordeaux, Blairgowrie and Fontainebleau where most jobs are a driveway or walkway that's simply had enough. More often than not we're not laying onto virgin ground — we're pulling out paving that's thirty or forty years old, checking what's actually going on underneath, and rebuilding properly before a single new paver goes down.

The approach doesn't change wherever we are: protect the garden, the irrigation and the boundary wall that's been standing since before some of our crew were born, compact a base to suit the ground, lay to a clean pattern with a crisp edge, and leave the property tidy every single evening.

Business & retail

Cresta, Ferndale and the Randburg business core

Randburg's commercial paving centres on the retail strip around Cresta and the office buildings through Ferndale and the older Randburg CBD, with a scatter of light industrial and warehouse units through Strijdom Park. The brief stays much the same whichever it is: a surface that copes with daily vehicle and foot traffic, drains properly on a site that's rarely dead flat, and still looks presentable at the entrance.

We lay parking areas, forecourts and walkways, plus heavier industrial paving for yards and loading areas around Strijdom Park, scheduling the disruptive work after hours or over a weekend so a business doesn't lose a trading day.

FAQs

Paving questions from Randburg customers

The things people across Ferndale, Northcliff and the rest of Randburg ask us most.

Ask us a question
Do you cover my part of Randburg?

Yes. We work right across Randburg — Ferndale, Northcliff, Cresta, Bordeaux, Blairgowrie and Fontainebleau included. If you're closer to Roodepoort or Fourways, those areas have their own pages, but wherever you are around Randburg, phone and ask.

My driveway keeps cracking or sinking — why does this happen in Randburg?

Almost always it's an old base that was never built to today's standard, moving further under Gauteng's clay soil. Randburg has a lot of paving that's thirty-plus years old, and new pavers laid onto that same weak base will crack again within a season. We dig out and rebuild the base properly, which is the only fix that lasts.

Can you match new paving to my older driveway or an established garden?

Usually, yes. Most South African paver ranges are still available, and where an exact match isn't possible, we suggest the closest colour or a border that reads as intentional rather than patched — useful on Randburg's older properties where the existing brick has weathered for decades.

Do you handle steep stands and drainage?

Yes — this is routine on Randburg's ridges. We lay to a proper fall, fit channel drains where a site needs one, and choose a paver and pattern that grips on a slope, particularly around Northcliff and the steeper stands off Blairgowrie and Bordeaux.

How soon can you start a job in Randburg?

We book the free site visit within a few days. Once you've accepted a quote, most residential jobs start within one to two weeks — sooner over winter when we're quieter — and a standard driveway takes three to five working days from there.
