An East Rand lake town that's kept its big stands
Benoni grew up around Homestead Lake and has kept that feel — wide streets, mature jacarandas and stands that dwarf what the same money buys in Johannesburg's northern suburbs. Rynfield, Northmead, Lakefield and Farrarmere are full of homes built from the 1950s through the 1980s, most with room for a proper double driveway and a patio that actually gets used.
That size cuts both ways. There's real scope to pave a driveway or patio properly — wide enough for two cars, with a path to the door — but East Rand ground is heavy with clay, and plenty of older stands were paved decades ago on a base that was never built to last. We see driveways from Northmead to Crystal Park that have settled or gone wavy, and we work the same way right through Benoni and into neighbouring Boksburg, Kempton Park, Brakpan and Springs.

Like much of Gauteng, Benoni sits on expansive clay that swells when the rain comes and shrinks hard in a dry Highveld winter. On many older stands around Rynfield and Morehill, paving was laid straight onto that clay on little more than a sand bed. It's why so many decades-old driveways here have a dip by the garage or a ridge where a root has pushed through. We excavate deeper and compact a proper G5 sub-base instead.
Stands that slope toward the lake
Properties around Lakefield and the lower end of Farrarmere slope gently toward Homestead Lake, and that run-off has to go somewhere sensible or it ends up against your wall. We lay every driveway and patio to a proper fall, and fit a channel drain where a stand collects more water than it should.
Big stands mean more paving to get right
A typical stand in Farrarmere or Crystal Park is considerably bigger than its equivalent in Johannesburg's northern suburbs, meaning a longer driveway, a wraparound patio, or both. More square metres means more room for error if the base isn't consistent throughout — we screed and compact the whole area to the same standard, not just the bit visible from the street.

Why does my Benoni driveway keep cracking or sinking?
Almost always it's the clay under an older base that was never compacted properly. Expansive clay will crack or settle whatever sits on a weak base, so new pavers laid on the same base just crack again — rebuilding it properly is the only fix that lasts.
Can you match new paving to my existing driveway?
Usually, yes. Most paver ranges sold in South Africa are still available, and where we can't match exactly we'll suggest the closest colour or a border that makes the join look planned rather than patched.
How soon can you start on a job in Benoni?
