Boksburg began as a gold-mining town on the East Rand in the 1880s, and that history still shows around the lake and the old CBD. Today it gives us two different jobs: quiet streets in Bartlett and Parkdene, and the Jet Park belt by O.R. Tambo International Airport, thick with warehouses and transport yards.
Underneath both sits the same reactive Highveld clay that catches out paving across Gauteng. It swells in summer rain and shrinks hard in a dry winter, and a driveway on a thin, poorly compacted base cracks within a season.
