Local overview

Large stands, leafy streets — paving that has to earn its keep

Bryanston still carries the bones of what it was before Johannesburg's northern suburbs grew up around it: big stands, some over an acre, laid out when this was smallholding country rather than city. A job here looks different to a townhouse complex in Sandton — one property can mean forty metres of driveway and a parking court, winding past beds with thirty years of growth behind them. Protecting all of that is half the job, so we plan the access route first and hand-carry material past anything we can't safely drive over.

We work right across the suburb — the estates around Nicolway and Epsom Downs, the river-facing stands near River Club, the older plots off Mount Street, and both Bryanston East and Bryanston West. The ground underneath is much the same: reddish Gauteng clay that moves with the seasons and needs a proper engineered base, not a thin bed of sand under the pavers.

The local picture

What makes paving in Bryanston its own job

Three things about this suburb change how we plan and build.

Clay soil under an established garden

Bryanston sits on the same active clay that runs through the Highveld, but here it's usually hidden under decades of lawn and root growth. We still excavate to the depth the ground needs and rebuild a compacted sub-base, working around root balls so the garden survives the work.

Long driveways and multiple parking areas

A single property can have an entrance driveway, a turning circle and a separate parking court, each carrying a different load. We set out the fall and base for the whole layout up front, rather than paving one section and hoping the rest ties in.

Slopes toward the Spruit and summer storms

Stands closer to the Braamfontein Spruit often slope more than they look on a dry day, and a Highveld storm turns a driveway without a proper fall into a small river. We build in channel drains or permeable pavers where water needs somewhere to go.

Driveways, courtyards and gardens built to last

Most of our Bryanston work is residential, and most of it starts at the gate. A cracked or dated driveway is usually the first thing replaced when a home changes hands, and it's the first thing every guest sees. We re-lay these to a pattern and paver that suits an established home — herringbone clay brick for a traditional stand, larger-format pavers for something more contemporary. Further in it's courtyards, side-access paths and pool surrounds, worked around mature trees and irrigation, with the garden left tidy every evening.

Business & offices

William Nicol, Nicolway and Bryanston's business pockets

Bryanston isn't only large homes. William Nicol Drive and the streets around Nicolway carry a steady run of offices, medical suites and small retail centres, each needing parking that holds up to daily traffic and drains properly once a Highveld storm hits. We lay parking lots, forecourts and walkways for these properties, scheduling the noisy work over a weekend or after hours so a practice or office doesn't lose trading time.

FAQs

Paving questions from Bryanston customers

The things Bryanston homeowners and businesses ask us most.

Ask us a question
Do you pave all around Bryanston?

Yes. We cover the whole suburb — Nicolway, Epsom Downs, River Club, Mount Street, and both Bryanston East and Bryanston West. Just outside Bryanston, our Sandton, Fourways and Rivonia pages cover those areas too.

Our driveway is cracking and lifting — why?

Almost always it's clay soil moving under a base that wasn't built deep or compacted enough for a stand this size. A long run carries more weight than a small townhouse driveway, so a shallow base fails faster. We dig out and rebuild it properly — the only fix that lasts.

Can you protect our garden and driveway while you work?

Yes — on a suburb like this, it's often the trickiest part of the job. We plan the access route before we start and keep mature trees, beds and irrigation clear of machinery and spoil.

Can you match new paving to our existing driveway or patio?

Usually, yes. Most South African paver ranges are still available, and where an exact match isn't possible, we'll suggest the closest colour or a border that makes the join look planned rather than patched.

How do you handle sloped stands and drainage?

Carefully — several Bryanston stands slope toward the Braamfontein Spruit valley, and a Highveld storm finds every weak fall. We lay every driveway and patio to a deliberate slope, and fit channel drains or permeable pavers where water needs somewhere to go.
